Troubleshoot slow game or app downloads on Xbox One

Solution 1: Check your connection speed

Follow these steps to check your connection speed:

  1. Press the Menu button on your controller and select Settings.
  2. Select Network, and then select Bandwidth usage.
  3. Note your current usage.

This indicates the current network speed for your console. Typical background usage will vary between 3 and 5 kilobytes per second (KB/s). This is because your console is continuously trying to connect to the Internet. If you're seeing slower speeds (for example, 350 bytes per second) and you're trying to download a game or app, it may take a long time for the download to complete.

The table below represents estimated download times based on your current download speed.
Note: This information is intended as a guide only, not an actual representation of download time. Bandwidth will be throttled and download time will increase during activities such as streaming content or playing multiplayer games online.

Current download speed 30-GB file 40-GB file 50-GB file 60-GB file 70-GB file
2 Mb/s 33.3 hours 44.4 hours 55.6 hours 66.7 hours 77.8 hours
5 Mb/s 13.3 hours 17.8 hours 22.2 hours 26.7 hours 31.1 hours
10 Mb/s 6.7 hours 8.9 hours 11.1 hours 13.3 hours 15.6 hours
20 Mb/s 3.3 hours 4.4 hours 5.6 hours 6.7 hours 7.8 hours
50 Mb/s 1.3 hours 1.8 hours 2.2 hours 2.7 hours 3.1 hours
100 Mb/s 0.7 hours 0.9 hours 1.1 hours 1.3 hours 1.6 hours
200 Mb/s 0.3 hours 0.4 hours 0.6 hours 0.7 hours 0.8 hours

Example:

If you're installing a 40-GB file and it shows 25 percent downloaded (30 GB remaining) and your connection speed is 10 Mb/s, it should take about 4.4 hours for the download to complete. (This assumes the speed stays the same.)

Your ISP connection speed should be at least 1.5 Mb/s for the best experience while connected to Xbox Live. For more information about bandwidth usage or to troubleshoot your network connection, see the Xbox One Network Connection Error Solution.

Solution 2: Restart your console

  1. Press the Menu button on your controller and select Settings.
  2. Select Power & startup, and then select Restart now.
  3. On the Restart your console screen, select Yes.

Note: This will automatically pause any existing downloads. They will resume once the console has restarted.

If you can't restart your console this way, you can also restart by following these steps:

  1. Press and hold the Xbox button on the console for at least 10 seconds, until the console shuts down.
  2. Press the Xbox button on the wireless controller to turn on both the controller and the console.

When you restart your console, all open apps and games are closed. Your console also keeps a cache of files from Blu-ray Discs, which will also be cleared. Once your console has restarted, verify that your downloads have resumed by doing the following:

  1. Say «Xbox, go to my games and apps» or open My games and apps on the Home screen.
  2. Select Queue and highlight the game or app you're trying to download.
  3. The game or app should show as Installing…
  4. If the status shows as Queued or Paused, select the game or app and press the Menu button, and then select Resume installation.

Once you’ve checked that your downloads have resumed:
1. Check your connection speed again. (Solution #1 listed at the top of this article)
2. To avoid slowing your download, don't launch any games or apps until your download has completed.

Solution 3: Cancel the game or app installation and then reinstall

If the steps above didn't resolve the problem, you should cancel the game installation. Here’s how:

  1. Say "Xbox, go to my games and apps" or open My games and apps on the Home screen.
  2. Select Queue and highlight the game or app you're trying to download.
  3. Press the Menu button on your controller, and then select Cancel.

You can then reinstall the game by downloading it again from the Xbox Store. To download the game again, search for «World of Tanks» in the store, select the game, and then select Install.
